An Aboriginal Affairs Ministry official should not have made comments to the effect that developers caught in the middle of a land claim dispute will have to fend for themselves, says Brant Liberal candidate Dave Levac.
Ministry spokesman Lars Eddy told a Hamilton Spectator reporter on Tuesday that developers facing heat from natives for building on disputed land “should proceed” with their projects.
When asked what happens in the event of a confrontation with Six Nations residents, Eddy was quoted as saying: “That’s between the developers, it’s their property … and the Six Nations.”
Word of the remarks reached an irate developer Mike Quattrociocchi who is caught in a dispute with the Confederacy over his housing development on Grand River Avenue. It spread quickly through local political ranks and into the provincial election campaign in Brant riding.

Local political leaders say they have lots of problems with a protocol released by the Six Nations Haudenosaunee that covers development around the Grand River.
The council of the traditional Confederacy has implemented a development protocol it says will affect every building project in the Haldimand Tract area, six miles on either side of the Grand River, granted at one time to Six Nations.
It calls on developers to approach the Confederacy council, get its blessing and pay fees. (Edit: Extortion) It also calls on municipalities to refuse to grant permits to developers who don’t follow those rules.
Mayor Mike Hancock said municipalities can’t possibly comply with parts of the protocol because to do so they would be breaching the Ontario Municipal Act and other pieces of legislation.
“In reality, the answer remains what it has always been – municipalities have no jurisdiction to deal with native land issues,” he said.
“Ceasing to grant development permits, we can’t do that even if we wanted. We don’t have the luxury of deciding what laws to apply

Hamilton SpectatorPremier Dalton McGuinty says a Conservative government would threaten millions in provincial cash for Hamilton’s Randle Reef and Lister Block projects.
McGuinty said the projects would “no longer have a certain future” if the Conservatives are elected.
The premier would not speak to the media after his appearance to answer questions about his government’s hands-off policy on disputes between developers and natives. Nor was he available to discuss the controversial certification of Hamilton carpenters’ union – a move that will cost local taxpayers millions of dollars a year.
Instead he boarded his campaign bus promptly and departed for London.

A Brantford developer’s frustration over native land claims came to a boil during a confrontation Wednesday with Premier Dalton McGuinty.
Mike Quattrociocchi, owner of Mayberry Homes, intercepted the premier as he left a campaign stop at a Hamilton banquet hall, where McGuinty had just delivered a speech to Liberal supporters.
“What are you going to do about the natives on my site?” Quattrociocchi shouted while standing in front of the premier.
“As much as I can,” McGuinty said, before his answer was drowned out by Liberal supporters cheering: “Dalton, Dalton, Dalton.”
“The premier told me it was a federal issue and got on (his campaign) bus,” Quattrociocchi said. “That is not leadership.

In the ‘Who the hell do you think you are?‘ department, McGuinty’s Liberal campaign office today tried to silence and control the media by trying – unsuccessfully – to threaten CHTV into not running a story about a Brantford developer’s confrontation with the Premier over his government’s refusal to provide assistance for builders suffering landclaim extortion and occupations.
Instead of talking about the importance of enforcing the law to protect the integrity of the Land Titles system, the Premier, through his campaign office, threatened to 1. lodge a complaint with senior executives, 2. Lodge a complaint with Canadian Broadcasts Standards, and 3. Deny CHTV access to the Premier during the election campaign!
Actually, it’s not the first time McGuinty’s people have threatened CHTV for telling the truth about native lawlessness. The first time (that we know of!) was August 3rd last year when Chris Morley, McGuinty’s Press Secretary, tried to intimidate CHTV producer Lawrence Diskin because they interviewed Gary McHale. According to McHale, Diskin told him CHTV was to be punished by McGuinty for having McHale on TV.
