Ontario Premier calls for an ‘intelligent’ and ‘accelerated’ land claims process

The federal Conservatives should embrace the principles of the Kelowna Accord signed by the previous Liberal government, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said Wednesday. The “extraordinary” $5.1-billion deal designed to help lift natives out of poverty has fallen by the wayside while aboriginal protests have continued to spread across Canada, McGuinty said.

With a national day of aboriginal protests planned for June 29, McGuinty said he wants Ottawa to quickly develop a “more intelligent and accelerated” way to settle about 800 outstanding land claims to help ease tensions.
