With the discovery of a Native Supremacy movement in Ontario, it’s important to understand what drives people to commit monstrous acts such as the terrorizing and murder of others based purely on their race. For those of us who don’t posses this hatred, it will never be possible to fully grasp it but it’s worth trying to because one thing every hate group in history has had in common is the unwillingness to attempt to understand those they hate and oppress.

Let’s start with a look at some of the various Supremacy groups that have existed over the years starting with the first on record.

The Ku Klux Klan:

Founded in 1865 by six educated middle class Confederate war veterans under the premise of boredom with the post war routine, the original Ku Klux Klan spread from Tennessee to nearly every other southern State launching a reign of terror on Republican leaders and constitutional speakers in their early days which saw the murders of an Arkansas Congressman, 3 members of the South Carolina Legislature, and at least 3 men who had served in constitutional conventions.

The group claimed to be advocates for “the reenfranchisement and emancipation of the white men of the South”. In the process of trying to control the freedoms and rights of freed slaves and anyone who supported beliefs other than their own, they frequently launched “Klan Raids” which consisted of large groups of masked men arriving at the home of someone who supported those they sought to oppress in the middle of the night and terrorizing them into following orders.

They publicly stated that the Klan was a peaceful organization. Such claims were common ways for them to attempt to protect themselves from prosecution. They murdered hundreds of black people and called it self defence by stating the Klan had been “fired into three times,” and that if the blacks “make war upon us they must abide by the awful retribution that will follow.”

In 1869 the Klan was ruled a “terrorist organization” by a federal grand jury at which point leaders ordered the disbanding of the group, and many fled to avoid prosecution. The group carried on however under a nervous government that was hesitent to act against them until 1871 when the “Ku Klux Klan act” was passed by US president Grant.

In 1915, the release of a propaganda film called “The Birth of a Nation” brought the Klan back to life in an even more vicious form. Telling the public its purpose was “To protect the weak, the innocent, and the defenseless from the indignities, wrongs and outrages of the lawless, the violent and the brutal; to relieve the injured and oppressed; to succor the suffering and unfortunate, and especially the widows and orphans of the Confederate soldiers.” They spread their hatred of jews, blacks, immigrants, communists, and catholics across the USA and into Canada even going so far at to murder Black soldiers returning from while they were still in their military uniforms. The Klan warned Blacks that they must respect the rights of the white race “in whose country they are permitted to reside.”

The carnage wrought by this group on the citizens of the USA is imfamous and the Klan exists to this day in various splinter cells across North America.

Nation of Islam:

Founded in the U.S. in 1930 by Wallace Fard Muhammad, The Nation of Islam teaches that white people are genetically engineered “devils”, created to be liars and murderers. White people are held to be the enemies of all black people. in the late 1950s and early 1960s The organization came to national prominence in America with the notorious Malcom X as their spokesperson, and Muhammed Ali as a well known member.

The belief in sacrificial killing and ritualistic murder was part of the early Nation of Islam doctrine. Fard thought explicitly that it was the duty for every member to offer as sacrifice four “Caucasian devils”

The Nation teaches that African (Black) people were the original humans. Prominent spokesman Louis Farrakhan has stated that “White people are potential humans…they haven’t evolved yet.” They use past oppression against black people by white people to justify their hatred and beliefs. The official platform of beliefs as published in 1965 in “Message to the Blackman in America” includes the following:

We want our people in America whose parents or grandparents were descendants from slaves to be allowed, to establish separate state or territory of their own — either on this continent or elsewhere. We believe that our former slave-masters are obligated to provide such land and that the area must be fertile and minerally rich. We believe that our former slave-masters are obligated to maintain and supply our needs in this separate territory for the next 20 or 25 years until we are able to produce and supply our own needs. Since we cannot get along with them in peace and equality after giving them 400 years of our sweat and blood and receiving in return some of the worst treatment human beings have ever experienced, we believe our contributions to this land and the suffering forced upon us by white America justifies our demand for complete separation in a state or territory of our own.

Past oppression leads them to believe that the USA should give them land and funding to create their own society within the Country. Interesting!

This ideology also culminated in the creation of the Death Angels, an offshoot of the Nation of Islam. Between 1972 and 1974 , the Death Angels murdered 14 whites in the San Francisco Bay area. These murders would later become known as the Zebra murders because the police used Radio Z to keep up to date with them. Some members of the Zebra task force suspected that up to 71 murders in California could have been the work of the same group since only four Death Angels were convicted out of a believed fifteen. Since many victims were drawn from the homeless or hitchhikers there is no certainty about the actual numbers.

The Nation continues to spread it’s message of hatred across the US today and in 2005 was classified as a hate group by the Southern Law Poverty Center. I can not find any official information about why this organization is allowed to continue and it’s members are not subject to prosecution under US law, so I will leave that question to the minds of the readers and simply point out that theories abound on the internet suggesting that the US government is simply afraid to enforce hate laws against an ethnic minority group. If true that would be a very dangerous mindset.

Japanese Supremacy:

It is widely reported and well known that during WWII, the Japanese believed themselves to be a superior race and thus refused to surrender to the USA even after being hit with the first Atomic Bomb. Despite warnings to surrender or face another blast, Japan refused to back down before the needless deaths of countless civilians at the hands of a second blast. Very similar thinking to their allies at the time..

Nazi Germany:

Adolph Hitler gains the trust of an entire country in the 1930’s by rebuilding their economy and military which had been shattered by their defeat during WWI. After being appointed Chacellor of Germany in 1933, Hitler and his Nazi party eliminate all opposition in Government by assasinating anyone who dares to oppose his views. He then manages to brainwash a Country in just years using the propaganda that Germans are “the” supreme race and that all of their problems in life were being caused by Jews.

With the rest of the world asleep at the switch, he is able to build a military empire that by many accounts came close to achieving their objective of conquering Europe, and in building the death factories known as Auchwitz, Birkenau, and Monowitz.

The Holocaust as it will forever be known was the result of a racial supremacy movement that ran unopposed. The number of people murdered by this regime before the world finally intervened varies greatly in estimates ranging from 1.1 Million to 14 + Million.

“Red Power” – Native Supremacy:

This newly discovered movement in Canada is based on the idea that people of Native (indigenous, indian, aboriginal) descent are a superior race and are being discriminated against by “Non Natives” with an especially powerful hatred of caucasians.

Recent propaganda released by this group includes videos that encourage Natives to take up arms and kill non Natives in order to “reclaim” what they believe to be their land, applaud the 9/11 Terrorist attacks on the United States as justified, and blame anything wrong in the lives of Natives on past and a perceived current oppression at the hands of the “White Man”.

A video they call “Igniting a revolution” runs a  speech by Malcolm X of the Nation of Islam about revolution. While he talks about how there is no such thing as a revolution without bloodshed, and how all revolutions are based on land, pictures of DCE and Native occupations play in the background.

Some excerpts from that video:

“Revolution is based on land. Land is the basis of all independence. Land is the basis of freedom, justice and equality. The white man knows what a revolution is… How do you think he’ll react to you when you learn what a real revolution is? “

“A revolution is bloody, revolution is hostile, revolution knows no compromise, revolution overturns and destroys everything that gets in its way”.

In one of two videos with the theme “KKKanada”, the headline “Caledonia vs. Six Nations” is displayed as the theme. Among the lyrics in this one:

“The plan is to take out the Native race, to all my Native men everywhere and every place, pick up your arms and stare the white man in his face. Wait till he does something, then take his place “

” Government still down with Native land rape, supreme court no jurisdiction over Native land fate, hate it’s all they want us to create.”

” At a fast rate our hate for you white Bastards will escalate, and in states of emergency our Native spirits will never break. ”

The lyrics of the other are particularly disturbing and require some editing for publication.

“Shine up these AK  pull a female forward you better believe it, we ready for war.”

“The axis of evil is alive and well, UK US Cana damn you to hell, (incoherent) solider finding my own, Now reap MotherF**ker what you have sown.”

“Don’t defend yourselves you’re better off dead. To hell with a sit in, it’s time to stand up while you’re soldiers gone you’re weaker than F**k.”

“Burning bridges taking down power lines 2007 it’s a sign of the times revolution’s real, feel my pain strap to a board and smash through your f**king brain. Ammonia Nitrate detonate a primer cord, hazard no more digging up the dawn, counter intelligence information aint gonna stop till I destroy your Nation, concerning non violence to hell with you all, fascist little bitches is the reason we fall.”

“Stare the enemy right in the eye, pull the pin prepare to die, residential schools attempted genocide, now it’s your turn to run and hide. Harper and McHale hope you burn in hell, you’ve done the right thing only time will tell. No one has ever called me a dirty Indian, down in Caledonia with the crosses burning, Canada sat down make a smart bomb, strapping myself up ready to get it on”

“now Die motherf**ker I don’t mess around you lit the fuse now reap what you’ve sown, chance for peace that f**king shit is gone.”

There is not yet sufficient information to report when and where exactly this group was formed or by who, but CSIS is investigating and hopefully we will have more information in the very near future.

Our society needs to wake up and reject the idea that only White Supremacy Movements exist, and treat such actions by any group as the equally intolerable, entirely socially unacceptable behavior that it is.

The tactics of the Native Supremacists were clearly inspired by the KKK.
Showing up in large groups peering through masks, wrapped in their flags
claiming to be defending their culture and their freedom, and the use of
fire all to intimidate their victims are hallmarks of both groups. Each
have their colours to wear and the choice of objects to burn varies but
their message is the same. Both claim to be protecting their woman &
children and are willing to use violence to preserve their culture and
will target anyone who may oppose their views.

The only difference between Nazi Germany and the other hate groups listed above is that the Nazi’s were allowed to run unchecked until they had reached a fever pitch and slaughtered millions of people in an effort to achieve their end goal.

The basic ideology of hate has always been and will always be the advocating of violence, hatred, and hostility towards members of a race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation or other designated sector of society. These groups will always propagate assertions, myths, narratives and rumours which play on the fears and jealousy of those they hope to have join them in order to bring in members.

A report released by the FBI in 2003 states that a hate group if unimpeded will go through the following 7 successive stages of hate.

“Stage 1: Grouping

Haters feel compelled to have others hate as they do. Through peer validation, they get a sense of self-worth and at the same time prevent introspection. Individuals who otherwise would be ineffective become empowered when they form or join groups. In addition, groups provide a welcome anonymity in which to express hate without being held accountable.

Stage 2: Self-definition

Hate groups create identities through symbols, mythologies, and rituals, designed to enhance the members’ status and at the same time, degrade the object of their hate.

Stage 3: Disparaging the target

By verbally debasing the object of their hate, haters enhance their self-image, as well as their group status. Researchers have found that the more often a person thinks about aggression, the greater the chance for aggressive behavior to occur. Thus, after constant verbal denigration, haters progress to the next stage.

Stage 4: Taunting the target

Time cools the fire of hate forcing the hater to look inward. To avoid introspection, haters increase their use of rhetoric and violence to maintain high levels of agitation. Taunts and offensive gestures serve this purpose.

Stage 5: Attacking without weapons

This stage is critical because it differentiates vocally abusive haters from physically abusive ones. Violence coalesces hate groups and isolates them from mainstream society. The element of thrill-seeking appears in this stage. The adrenaline “high” intoxicates the attackers. Each successive hate derived thought or action triggers a more violent response than the one that originally initiated the sequence. Anger builds on anger. Adrenaline-high combined with hate becomes a deadly combination

Stage 6: Attacking with weapons

Some attackers use firearms to commit hate crimes, while others prefer close-contact weapons. Requiring the attacker to be close to the victim, shows the personal-anger aspects of hate. Some attackers choose to discharge firearms at a distance, thus avoiding personal contact. Personal contact empowers and fulfills the deep-seated need of the hater to have dominance over the object of their hate.

Stage 7: Destroying the target

The ultimate goal of haters is to destroy the object of their hate. With the power over life and death comes a great sense of self-worth and value; however, the ultimate destiny of hate is the physical and psychological destruction of both the hater and the hated.”

The only way for us to stop these movements is to keep pressure on our government to take swift action against them and to keep ourselves informed about the dangers of falling into the trap of hatred.

  1. Jeff,

I first got a glimpse of the Native Supremacy movement back in October 2006 when I videotaped the verbal attacks on Gary McHale in Brantford as he was shouted down by supporters of the DCE Landclaim Terrorists. The vicious racism I saw was what forced me to join McHale, and it is why I made my movie, MARCH FOR FREEDOM (

I got a first hand at native hate when I received a threat shortly after releasing The Ipperwash Papers at Queen’s Park last March. His comments showed what true hate looks like:

“Who the hell do you thing you are you white asshole? You and your white people have no right telling us NATIVE PEOPLE what to do or give us laws. We should be telling you white land thiefs what to do. Just Fuck Off before you cause any trouble.. again, what else is new? I all the whitemans problem. If you don’t like what we do ON OUR LAND, THEN LEAVE IT. ITS ALL OURS. Leave us alone we are our own people, we make our own laws.”

    ‘Justin’ Wed 3/14/2007 6:37 PM

After asking him, politely, what he was so angry about, Justin had this to say:

“There is no two Tier Justice, we as native people are doing what has to be done to fight against the whiteman and take back what is ours. we don’t have to follow the laws of the whiteman because we are not white asshole like you. Give up or i will personally find you and kick your white ass to the ground.”

Jeff, congratulations on a well written, well-researched comparison of ‘Red Power’ to other supremacy movements! I believe that is work like yours that will help honourable native people realize the dangers posed to their communities by those who hate, both native and non-native.

  2. Leith Peterson says:

Thanks for compiling this, Jeff. The people of Caledonia and Ipperwash–both native and non-native–who are caught in the middle of this are in my prayers. You can rest assured I’m letting people know how concerned I am, including my MP and MPP.

  3. caledoniawakeupcall says:

    Hi guys,

Mark I remember a post you made out of the comments / threats you got about Ipperwash. It was a powerful glimpse at how their minds work. Thanks for sharing them here as it seems extremely appropriate. I’m certainly glad you like the article.

I actually learned alot doing this such as the true nature of the Nation of Islam. Everyone knows what the KKK stand for, but I don’t think those of us who did not live through the worst of the Nation days tend to know how similar they are.

Leith, you’re certainly welcome. You can make a real difference by picking up the phone and calling your MP and MPP. The problem is those think “someone else will do it”. The first thing I learned being a part of this group is that someone else isn’t going to do it.

It’s up to average citizens like you and I to send the calls, email, faxes, and letters to the officials, and to keep making the noise so they know we’re not forgetting about this so they can quietly cut a deal to make it go away. Keep the pressure on!

    Thanks for weighing in,
