Cowardly Councilor calls for development freeze in Brantford

As reported today in the Brantford Expositor, Councilor James Calnan intends to ask council to support a complete ban on development on any land that Six Nations claims in the city.

The move comes as a surprise to some as Calnan previously voted in favor of seeking the injunction barring extortionists from halting development at several city sites. He now says he regrets his previous decision to do the right thing because when he voted in favor of the injunction he thought it would be followed by the City extending an “olive branch” to Six Nations.

How this guy can possibly believe that any “olive branch” extended wouldn’t be used to smack Brantford in the face is beyond me, but in any case he’s clearly lost the spine he had when he voted for the injunction.

To Quote the Expositor Article:

“Calnan said he doesn’t expect much support from council for his proposal to freeze development on land under claim, but he intends to press forward.

“Quite honestly, I think I’m going to find myself alone on this,” Calnan said. “But you do something because it’s right, not because you think it’s going to be popular.”

So he’s taking this position knowing that he’s not likely to get any support for this new position of cowardice and appeasement at all costs, and trying to claim it’s the right thing to do. Why has abandoning law and order suddenly become the right thing to do?

I would suggest that this ridiculous move may actually be carefully calculated political strategy on the part of Mr. Calnan. By bringing forward a motion that he knows Council is likely to balk at, he gets to say to the Natives “I tried” and since he’s already voted for it, he gets to tell everyone who is in favor of the injunction “I tried”.

The problem with this is that people aren’t as stupid as politicians would like us to be, and we do remember these colossal lapses of morality down the road. There may be some who forget about this come election time, but Mr. Calnan can rest assured that CANACE will be there to remind them that a vote for Calnan is a vote for cowardice.

So Calnan considers capitulating to illegal 3rd party demands and paying criminal extortion with taxpayers money to be “doing what’s right?. I hope his constituents S-can his dystopian ass for selling them and their property out to criminal enterprise.

Maybe I should shout and talk very slowly so the Calnans of the world can understand what’s at play here.

THE DEVELOPMENTS ARE LAWFUL AND HAVE THE FULL FORCE OF THE LAW BEHIND THEM. HDI DEMANDS ARE ILLEGAL BECAUSE NO JUDGEMENT HAS BEEN MADE TO BACK THEIR CLAIMS!

    Any clearer now Mr. Calnan?

If you were my councilor I’d sue your ass for breach of public trust and devaluing my property. If you want to “do what you feel is right”, and not what the law says is right, resign your position which demands you uphold the law…then join HDI as a lobbyist. But don’t be so craven as to take a salary from your constituents for selling them out to unlawful extortion.

thank GOD mr.calnan dosen’t live in cayuga because he’s got more room to hide his two faces in brantford !!!

  3. Mr. Giggles says:

I find this very interesting that Calnan is saying what McGiunty’s palnning on doing in the fall when the parliament sits again.

Dalton what to move around the green space plan a little by making the whole of the Haldimand Tract Green Space. That will include all development that has not started building, will be stopped and no further devlopments for that area.

This is sheer madness to shut down an economy while the provincial economy is slowing. What kind of Government has this become and what will become of these cities and towns?

The appeasement that is being displayed by our Provincial Government is at a stage of disbelief.
Instead of making comment to the press that would aid or help the situation Mr. Bryant lays all blame at the Federal Governments feet and we are supposed to buy into to this how?

    Well said.

I would say the Liberals are on the run from the monster they have created and the best short term solution is to blame someone else.

This doesn’t really account for the cowardice of Mr. Calnan who I still think is likely trying to play both sides of the fence.
