August 26, 2008 – Updated August 29, 2008 with comments from Toby Barrett.
When Julian Fantino was caught making threats to Haldimand council in 2007, there was hope that his reign as commissioner would be brought to an end. Mayor Trainer went on TV and radio to help expose the story, and even mainstream media started wondering if Julian should be fired.
Unfortunately Councilor Grice who had been specifically targeted by Fantino for daring to speak freely decided to do what he felt was right for his political career instead of what was right for his constituents by refusing to sign a police service complaint, and the story faded away before Fantino could be held accountable.
One would think Fantino would have learned his lesson about threatening our elected officials, but unfortunately the lesson he learned is that he can get away with such things, so why not do it again.
MPP Toby Barrett was one of the key speakers at the original March for Freedom in 2006 and he tolerated many threats from supporters of Native Terrorism to do so because it was the right thing for his constituents, but he has been conspicuously absent and increasingly quiet as of late. When events are held that could make a real impact; he seems to always have another engagement of some sort which prevents him from attending.
The sad, disturbing truth is that Toby Barrett is being threatened and bullied by Julian Fantino who is desperate to silence anyone that poses any threat to his dictatorship style reign as OPP commissioner. As the elected voice of Haldimand County, Mr. Barrett has both the power and the responsibility to do what is right for his constituents and right now that means coming forward to expose this affront to Justice and Democracy.
Hopefully the actions of Toby Barrett in the coming days will answer some very important questions. Should the people in Mr. Barrett’s riding have the right to know that their representative has been threatened by Fantino? Do people have the right to know whether these threats have in fact silenced Mr. Barrett? Does the PC Party of Ontario care that an elected Member of Provincial Parliament is being intimidated by the police?
Will the same Toby Barrett who stood tall in the face of harassment and intimidation by Native extremists in order to speak for his people at the March for Freedom now stand tall in the face of an even more despicable form of harassment and intimidation, or will he choose to embolden Fantino even further by allowing himself to be silenced?
As a constituent who voted for Mr. Barrett, and as a victim of the violence that has resulted from the race based policing that Fantino has in place in Caledonia, I am very hopeful that my MPP will do what he knows is right by refusing to allow himself to be victimized and silenced by the out of control commissioner of the OPP.
When contacted about this story, Toby’s office declined comment.

Update 080829 – Toby finally decided to comment and confirmed the accuracy of this report by issuing the following to the Simcoe Reformer.
“I’ve been putting up with this kind of stuff for 13 years,” MPP Toby Barrett said yesterday in a phone interview. “It makes me angry, but I’m a public figure.”
“As an MPP I cannot reveal what the commissioner wrote as letters to me are in confidence,” Barrett said.Jeff Parkinson Jeff@CaledoniaWakeupCall.com
