Barrett under siege by Fantino

August 26, 2008 – Updated August 29, 2008 with comments from Toby Barrett.

When Julian Fantino was caught making threats to Haldimand council in 2007, there was hope that his reign as commissioner would be brought to an end. Mayor Trainer went on TV and radio to help expose the story, and even mainstream media started wondering if Julian should be fired.

Unfortunately Councilor Grice who had been specifically targeted by Fantino for daring to speak freely decided to do what he felt was right for his political career instead of what was right for his constituents by refusing to sign a police service complaint, and the story faded away before Fantino could be held accountable.

One would think Fantino would have learned his lesson about threatening our elected officials, but unfortunately the lesson he learned is that he can get away with such things, so why not do it again.

MPP Toby Barrett was one of the key speakers at the original March for Freedom in 2006 and he tolerated many threats from supporters of Native Terrorism to do so because it was the right thing for his constituents, but he has been conspicuously absent and increasingly quiet as of late. When events are held that could make a real impact; he seems to always have another engagement of some sort which prevents him from attending.

The sad, disturbing truth is that Toby Barrett is being threatened and bullied by Julian Fantino who is desperate to silence anyone that poses any threat to his dictatorship style reign as OPP commissioner. As the elected voice of Haldimand County, Mr. Barrett has both the power and the responsibility to do what is right for his constituents and right now that means coming forward to expose this affront to Justice and Democracy.

Hopefully the actions of Toby Barrett in the coming days will answer some very important questions. Should the people in Mr. Barrett’s riding have the right to know that their representative has been threatened by Fantino? Do people have the right to know whether these threats have in fact silenced Mr. Barrett? Does the PC Party of Ontario care that an elected Member of Provincial Parliament is being intimidated by the police?

Will the same Toby Barrett who stood tall in the face of harassment and intimidation by Native extremists in order to speak for his people at the March for Freedom now stand tall in the face of an even more despicable form of harassment and intimidation, or will he choose to embolden Fantino even further by allowing himself to be silenced?

As a constituent who voted for Mr. Barrett, and as a victim of the violence that has resulted from the race based policing that Fantino has in place in Caledonia, I am very hopeful that my MPP will do what he knows is right by refusing to allow himself to be victimized and silenced by the out of control commissioner of the OPP.

When contacted about this story, Toby’s office declined comment.

Anyone wishing to encourage Toby to do the right thing may wish to contact his office at 519-428-0446 and the Ontario PC party at 1-800-903-6453

Update 080829 – Toby finally decided to comment and confirmed the accuracy of this report by issuing the following to the Simcoe Reformer.

“I’ve been putting up with this kind of stuff for 13 years,” MPP Toby Barrett said yesterday in a phone interview. “It makes me angry, but I’m a public figure.”

“As an MPP I cannot reveal what the commissioner wrote as letters to me are in confidence,” Barrett said.

I’d like to hear him take the truth public as well Lloyd, and I’m very hopeful that he will do so in the very near future.

    Good morning Jeff:
From a posting Aug. 23/08 – 9:18AM the writer said it correctly but was directing the statement to another infringement against ‘common sense’.
The last sentence in that message was so very true and could well fit in so many places, most deffinately here.
“This group (OPP) needs to be totally abolished and starting from the head (Fantino) down, be reinvented”.
The answer is to get rid of several wimpy Liberals at Toronto’s Provincial office and certainly chop the head off the dragon Fantino with his upper cronies in crime and the general difficulty in finding mutual solutions will become more clear.

I remember that story well Murray.

A quick update to this story, we have confirmed reports that people trying to call Toby to encourage him to do the right thing are getting a machine at his office, so please be patient in trying to contact our MPP.

  5. Merv Kirton says:

I want to Thank Toby Barrett for trying to stand up for equal rights as that seems to be far from Julian Fantino’s policies. Lets stand behind Toby Barrett & the Conserative Party.

  6. caledoniawakeupcall says:

    I’m absolutely with you Merv.

We need to stand behind Toby as he exposes this latest attempt by Fantino to interfere with the Democratic process. It’s not an easy thing for some to stand up to a bully like Julian Fantino, so it may take a bit of encouragement on our part to help him make that decision, but everyone will be much better off for it.

    Dear Jeff,
I am very surprised that once again an unelected official ( Julian Fantino) has the power to intimidate people including MPP’s and supress the truth of the conditions ongoing in Caledonia and Brantford etc.
Why isn’t the Conservative party as a whole bringing this out to the public????
If these kind of tactics are being used on those who represent us, why is Fantino even in his job as we speak. I do not know the details, but even a hint of what you are implying must be stopped immediately if it is true. I trust that Toby will not succumb to the antics of the OPP when he knows the difference between the truth and fabricated lies.

  8. Mary-Lou says:

    Dear Jeff,
Glad to see that Toby has gone public with his remarks about intimidation.
I knew he would do the right thing. Odd that the Conservatives kept this under wraps for this length of time.
The Simcoe newspaper article was excellent and also contained remarks from Gary.
Kudos to CWUC for getting the story out.
