January 12, 2012
On January 9, 2012 a note was left on Doug Flemming’s windshield exclaiming that “The Caledonia 8 is going down tonight and you’re the first to bite the bullet Flemming”. The night is of course over and nothing happened, but it was one in a long line of efforts over the years to intimidate us into backing off.
Winston Churchill once said “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.” A sentiment that rings as true 7 decades later as it did during WWII.
Reached for comment, the members of the Caledonia 8 shared their thoughts on the threat:
“If they had any backbone at all, they wouldn’t announce it. They’re fine if there’s 50 of them, but they’re cowards” – Merlyn Kinrade, RCN (retired)
Anyone who would leave a note is probably not going to leave a bomb. They’re not very sophisticated. – Doug Flemming
“It’s a pathetic attempt at intimidation by people who believe they are the only ones entitled to an opinion. We’re not going away so get used to it” – Jeff Parkinson
“If you aren’t being attacked in some way it’s because you’re not doing anything. Threats against us show how effective we are against those who are attacking the rule of law in our country.”– Mark Vandermaas
Writing out an opinion and sending it to a newspaper to share with others, along with your name, takes some courage and is a more worthwhile thing to do. – Bonnie Stephens
“A bunch of Cowards. They will no more stand up to us than fly to the moon. They’re the last people in the world I would be afraid of. It’s very typical to leave a note and run away. Writing on an onion ring container they probably stole from a little kid.” – Randy Flemming
“This is typical of the situation in Caledonia whereby a small group of thugs believe they can intimidate an entire town into submission. So far the OPP and McGuinty have aided in this intimidation. However, CANACE and the Caledonia 8 will not surrender the rights and principles that Canadians value so dearly.”- Gary McHale
“Someone who was serious would have acted and not wrote a note first. It’s not right but some people think that this type of behaviour is humourous.”– Jack VanHalteren
While members of the Caledonia 8 remain resolute in their determination, the police were called, and we’re sure they will conduct a full & impartial investigation unless it leads them to the Douglas Creek Estates home free zone in Caledonia.
